APPROACH MISSION: To teach students to master the skills needed to play piano for their lifetime.MOTIVATING MUSIC: From the start, our students learn in a fun and engaging way. They learn motivating music from all genres: classical, jazz and popular.COMPLETE TEACHING: – The student’'s future success at the piano is secured by consistent instruction in technique, theory, sight-reading and ear-training. We proudly use the curriculum of the Royal Conservatory of Music, the only course of study endorsed by Carnegie Hall.UNIQUE ASSESSMENTS: Our distinctive assessment program sets us apart from the competition. Besides a weekly lesson, each student receives four private assessments in which all skills needed to master piano playing will be measured. Both teacher and student have specific guidelines, so they know what to work on for each assessment. Parents, teachers and students will have a quarterly written review of the student’'s progress. In this way we can fulfill our mission of helping students to master the skills needed to play piano for their lifetime.BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS: – We have discovered that students encourage and learn from one another. To support their camaraderie, we hold four master classes per year in which students can perform for one another, play musical games, learn music history and of course, enjoy some snacks! SHARING MUSIC WITH OTHERS: – Performing for others sharpens skills and increases the student'’s self confidence. We have many optional performing opportunities for our students. They include low pressure venues such as playing in churches, nursing homes, retail stores, and community festivals. We also host two formal recitals in December and June. As members of the Music Educator’s National Conference, our students may also participate in competitions including the State Festival, Kirby Hall and Carnegie Hall performances.

INSTRUCTORS

All Abington Piano Academy instructors are college trained pianists and receive weekly training from Artistic Director and Master Instructor Denise Knox.Denise Knox (Artistic Director and Master Instructor) is a summa cum laude graduate of both Houghton College and Temple University where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and a Master of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy. At Temple, she studied with Alexander Fiorillo, student of world-renowned pianist Vladimir Horowitz. She also studied at the Eastman School of Music, Wells College, and the Chautauqua Institution. There she received specialized training from Haruko Kataoka, co-founder of the Suzuki Piano Method for children. Denise has taught piano for over thirty years and has held faculty positions at Temple University and the Academy of Children's Music in Philadephia. She also managed Temple's Center for Gifted Young Musicians. Maria delPico Taylor, of the Temple University College of Music, has declared that Denise is "An extraordinarily talented teacher, Mrs. Knox is one of a kind."Donna Kane graduated Marywood University with a degree in Music Education where she studied with Sr.Joan Paskert IHM majoring in classical piano and minoring in flute. She has been a music educator at private and public schools K-12 while offering private instruction in piano,flute, acoustic/classical guitar and voice since 1978. She has served as organist, vocalist, childrens choir director and folk group director at St.Marys Church Old Forge and has accompanied numerous high school musicals and concerts. Donna is a licensed Kindermusik instructor receiving her certification from Westminster Choir College/Rider University offering music enrichment programs for children and families , 18months through 4 years of age. While a member of the NEPMTA and past president of the northeast chapter, her students performed at the Dorothy Sutton Festival, Carnegie Hall and Kimmel Center Recitals.Stephani Austin graduated Baptist Bible College summa cum laude with a degree in Music Education, with joint emphases in voice, piano and flute. Stephani has recently earned a Masters Degree in Education from Baptist Bible Graduate School. This degree, with its emphasis upon teaching music theory, enhances her prestige in the local community of music instructors. Her thesis, Austins Theory Curriculum was written to conform to national standards for music education and the standards for the Pennsylvania branch of the National Association for Music Education. This curriculum is designed to reinforce information and skills in a fun and cooperative way. Austin's thesis was born out of her academic research, as well as her work with the students of Abington Piano Academy. Austin is excited to further develop her educational techniques with the Academy's growing student body.Michael Borthwick is the newest addition to the faculty of the Abington Piano Academy. A graduate of Marywood University, he has a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, with a Major in classical piano and a Minor in Jazz Piano. Borthwick has utilized his talents as a piano teacher since 2006. He has experience teaching students as young as 4 in both classical and jazz styles. Michael has also graced many with his remarkable musical abilities, as he has performed in musicals throughout northeast Pennsylvania. Additionally, the Mike Borthwick Jazz Trio continues to delight audiences. Michael is also an award-winning violinist.Allison Korman was trained in music education at Hunter College. As a music teacher for over a decade, Allison has trained students from ages three to seventy-four! Her extensive experience benefits our community of parents and students. Allison's weekend teaching schedule gives us greater flexibility to meet your scheduling needs!

Tuition

Abington Piano Academy, Tuition 2011-2012

School year tuition: Private lesson tuition includes 42 private lessons, 2 make-up lessons, 4 master classes, 4 assessments and 2 recitals. All dates are shown on the Abington Piano Academy calendar. There is an additional $50.00 upfront fee for music books.

Tuition for the 2011-2012 school year is as follows:

30 minute private lesson:

Payment method 1 - $100 per month using bank authorization. Withdrawals will occur on the 25th of each month. Monthly checks are not accepted.

Payment method 2 - $600 due by August 25 and $600 due by January 25

Payment method 3 - $1140 (5% discount on $1200) due by August 25

45 minute private lesson:

Payment method 1 - $144 per month using bank authorization. The first withdrawal will occur on August 25. Subsequent withdrawals will occur on the 25th of each month. Monthly checks are not accepted.

Payment method 2- $863 due by August 25 and $863 due January 25

Payment method 3 – $1639 (1725-5%) due by August 25

60 minute lessons:

Payment method 1 - $188 per month using bank authorization. The first withdrawal will occur on August 25. Subsequent withdrawals will occur on the 25th of each month. Monthly checks are not accepted.

Payment method 2 - $1125 due by August 25 and $1125 due January 27

Payment method 3 - $2138 ($2250 – 5% discount) due by August 25

Music Book Fee: There is a $50.00 upfront fee for music books. The Academy will order and pay for your books with this money. Unused money will be credited to your account. You will be billed if you exceed $50.00.

There is a $30 charge for any payment which is declined.
